FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is CrossFit good for beginners?
Absolutely.
Most people who join CrossFit Tannum Sands have never done CrossFit before. You do not need to be fit, strong, or experienced to get started.
Every workout is coached and scaled to suit your current fitness level, injuries, mobility, and confidence. Our goal is to help you build strength and fitness safely — without feeling overwhelmed or intimidated.
2. What if I’m really unfit?
That’s exactly why we’re here.
You do not need to “get fit first” before joining a gym. We work with beginners, busy parents, shift workers, and people returning to exercise after years away.
Everything is adjusted to your ability so you can improve at your own pace.
3. Is CrossFit safe?
Yes — when it’s coached properly.
At CrossFit Tannum Sands in Tannum Sands, every class is fully coach-led. We teach movement technique, safe progressions, and proper form before increasing intensity or weight.
Good coaching makes all the difference.
4. Am I too old to start CrossFit?
Not at all.
Strength training becomes even more important as we age because it helps improve balance, bone density, muscle mass, mobility, energy, and overall health.
We coach adults of all ages and fitness levels, including many people over 40 who simply want to feel stronger and healthier again.
5. Is CrossFit good for women over 40?
Absolutely.
Many women over 40 come to us wanting more energy, strength, confidence, and sustainable weight loss. Strength training is one of the best ways to support metabolism, bone health, and long-term fitness as you age.
Every workout can be modified to suit your experience and comfort level.
6. Will lifting weights make me bulky?
No.
Building large amounts of muscle takes years of very specific training and nutrition. Most people who strength train become leaner, stronger, and more toned.
Strength training also helps improve metabolism, posture, confidence, and everyday function.
7. What if I have injuries or bad knees/back pain?
In many cases, you can still train safely.
We regularly modify workouts for people with knee pain, back pain, shoulder injuries, and mobility limitations. Our coaches adjust movements, weights, and intensity to suit your needs.
We’ll discuss any injuries during your No Sweat Intro so we can create the best starting point for you.
8. Can exercise help lower back pain?
For many people, yes.
Poor strength, lack of movement, and long periods of sitting can often contribute to back pain. Strength training and improving movement quality can help build a stronger, more resilient body.
That said, everyone is different, so we always recommend speaking with a healthcare professional when needed and working within your limitations.
9. What if I haven’t exercised in years?
You are not alone.
A lot of our members start after long breaks from training. The important thing is simply getting started again.
We meet you where you’re at and help you rebuild confidence, fitness, and consistency step by step.
10. Is CrossFit good for weight loss?
CrossFit can be incredibly effective for weight loss because it combines strength training, conditioning, accountability, and consistency.
Building muscle helps improve metabolism and supports long-term fat loss — not just short-term results.
Combined with better nutrition habits, CrossFit helps people lose weight while also getting stronger and healthier.
11. Why am I not losing weight even though I exercise?
Weight loss is about more than simply exercising harder.
Sleep, nutrition, stress, consistency, recovery, and strength training all play a major role. Many people rely too heavily on cardio while ignoring muscle-building and sustainable habits.
That’s why we focus on long-term lifestyle change rather than quick fixes.
12. Is strength training better than cardio for fat loss?
Strength training is one of the most effective tools for sustainable fat loss because it helps build lean muscle and support metabolism.
Cardio can absolutely help, but relying only on cardio often leads to burnout and muscle loss.
The best approach usually includes both strength and conditioning.
13. Can CrossFit help with belly fat?
CrossFit can help reduce overall body fat when combined with consistency, proper nutrition, and healthy lifestyle habits.
Spot reduction is a myth — but improving strength, fitness, muscle mass, and nutrition can absolutely help people lose body fat over time.
14. How long does it take to see results?
Most people begin noticing improvements in energy, fitness, strength, and confidence within the first few weeks.
Visible body composition changes usually happen over several months of consistency.
The biggest key is sticking with the process.
15. How many days a week should I train?
For most beginners, 3 sessions per week is a great starting point.
This gives your body enough training while still allowing proper recovery.
Consistency beats going too hard too soon.
16. What is a typical CrossFit class like?
Classes usually include:
- A warm-up
- Skill or strength work
- The workout of the day
- Cool down and recovery
Everything is structured and coach-led so you’re never left wondering what to do.
17. Do I have to be competitive?
Not at all.
Most members are here to improve their health, fitness, strength, and confidence — not compete.
You’re only competing against yourself.
18. What makes CrossFit different from a normal gym?
The biggest difference is coaching, accountability, and community.
Instead of walking into a gym alone trying to figure things out, every session at CrossFit Tannum Sands is coached and programmed for you.
You’ll learn proper technique, stay motivated, and train alongside supportive people.

28. What should I bring to my first class?
Just bring comfortable training clothes, a water bottle, and a positive attitude.
You do not need fancy gear or experience. We’ll guide you through everything else.
29. What happens during my first visit?
Your first step is a No Sweat Intro.
This is a relaxed conversation where we learn more about your goals, injuries, lifestyle, and training history. From there, we’ll recommend the best starting point for you.
No pressure. No workout. Just a plan that makes sense for you.
30. Is there parking available?
Yes — there’s convenient parking nearby, making it easy to get in, train, and get on with your day.
